About ILS

ILS builds upon the success of its parent program, the groundbreaking and internationally renowned Summer Literary Seminars (SLS, 1998 - 2019).

Our mission as a not-for-profit organization is to amplify the literary and cultural visibility of Nairobi and Lamu within an international context and with a particular focus on showcasing the vibrant and complex voices of emerging East African writers. To do this we offer unique and intensive series of literary workshops, career consultations, and cultural offerings in Nairobi and Lamu that foster artistic cooperation, elevate emerging literary talent, and increase mutual understanding across the North American, East African, and international literary communities. In 2024, we are considering launching an online magazine of short fiction and poetry, featuring the work of emerging East African writers alongside both emerging and established international writers.

The in-person programming of ILS will draw participants from every corner of the globe, starting with 26 people in December 2022. Our thriving network is informed by SLS, which has brought well over 1500 emerging writers to Russia, Kenya, Lithuania, Georgia, and Montreal, with many participants going on to publish critically acclaimed books.

ILS will also award full scholarships (covering tuition, travel, and accommodations) to one international contest winner and three of the most talented emerging writers from Kenya, along with other merit-based fellowships. Our goal is to enable as many emerging writers, regardless of economic concerns, to work with their peers and the globally prominent authors, editors, publishers, and agents who will be teaching the workshops and giving consultations. To that end, we welcome your support.

Beginning 2023, the ILS staff will include…
